"If a doula were a drug, it would be unethical not to use it" John H. Kennell, MD.As a doula, I commit to provide emotional and practical support during pregnancy, birth and the early days to mothers, their partners and their families. “Doula” (pronounced “doo-la”) is an Ancient Greek word meaning “woman servant or caregiver”. Now it refers to an experienced woman who, without judgement or agenda, supports women and their partners to achieve a positive birth experience. “Mothering the mother” and furnishing her with unbiased information enables a woman to have the most satisfying and empowering time that she can during this precious journey. Warm, trusted companionship and encouragement during labour makes this an enriching experience and minimises technological intervention in the birth process. Continual trusted support in the early weeks can also lead to a sense of calm confidence in caring for a new baby, increase success with feeding and reduce the incidence of postnatal depression. I understand how to work with the energy of childbirth; meeting and flowing with the energy rather than avoiding or resisting it. As a doula I commit to take new parents on a journey of discovery, helping them develop a new respect and appreciation for the mothers’ body, recognising the unity of mind and body and reassuring the mother of her immense power as a woman in the creation of new life. To witness the birth of each new baby into this world remains without question an enormous privilege for me. Sally Cropper - Doula working with The Acupuncture Clinic |

Ante-Natal massage is a safe and wonderful way of managing stress by providing nurturing, emotional support. Experience relief from back pain, achy hips, and heavy legs amongst many other benefits from this versatile therapy. Massage during pregnancy can revitalise energy levels but most importantly it can promote a better night’s sleep, a real bonus. Your baby can benefit too, massage is calming for both of you and may boost both of your immune systems. To receive a back massage only minor adaptations are needed during the first trimester. From 13 weeks massages are given lying on your side, fully supported with pillows. The massage is tailored to your unique needs with space at the beginning of the session to discuss these. A natural and neutral massage wax is used, with all areas not being massaged covered by towels. For a different experience there is Thai yoga massage for pregnancy, this takes place on a futon and loose clothes are worn as no oils are used. You don’t have to be flexible and nor will you be stretched too far. As well as my massages, Aromatherapy, Shiatsu, Tui Na and Reflexology are all suitable to receive during pregnancy. Other therapists may work in different way to myself so it may be advisable to confirm at which stages of pregnancy you be able to receive treatments. Jane Newman is a resident massage therapist at The Acupuncture Clinic qualified in Pregnancy massage and Thai massage for pregnancy. She is happy to discuss any questions you may have regarding your treatment. Special offer for September: £5 discount off 1 hour & 1½ hour treatments with Jane (normally £40 and £55) £10 discount on 2 hour Thai massage with Jane (normally £70) |

Tui na is one of the newest additions to the range of therapies suitable for pregnant women at the Acupuncture Clinic. By combining the principles of acupuncture with highly specific massage techniques, Tuina prenatal massage can comfortably treat many of the common discomforts of pregnancy such as nausea, constipation, cramps, varicose veins, insomnia, back ache and pain. It is safe at all three trimesters and can also help to nourish and restore the body’s balance after delivery during the puerperium recovery period. As well as being relaxing Tuina massage can reduce muscle tension, restore postural alignment, enhance circulation to nourish tissues and reduce swelling. And for some women it can help them gain acceptance and ownership of their body as it changes during their pregnancy. Margaret Ousby - Tuina practitioner |
