A diagnosis is made in Chinese medicine by combining our consultation with traditional skills: pulse taking and tongue observation:
Acupuncturists use the pulse at your wrist to assist their diagnosis and to monitor treatment and progress. It is a skill that develops over years, and it can reveal a great deal of information about the balance of energy or Qi in your body.
An acupuncturist feels 6 different pulses on each wrist, giving us information about the 12 main Organs, as they are seen in Chinese medicine. A pulse reading helps us make a diagnosis, and the effects of the treatment can be instantly felt in the pulses.
In this way, we are able to discern whether the treatment is appropriate for you. Over the course of your treatments, we would expect your pulses to improve as do your symptoms and health, and this is one of the ways we can monitor your progress.
