Yoga

We offer various Yoga styles at The Acupuncture Clinic.

Here's some information to help you choose the most suitable, but please speak to us if you'd like some help.

Hatha Fusion Yoga    [top]

Hatha Fusion Yoga classes are taught in a Hatha Yoga style with Viniyoga and Ashtanga influences.

Hatha Yoga is seen as purely postural work these days, but ancient yoga texts place greater emphasis on pranayama (breathing exercises) and other techniques, as well as work in asana (postures).

Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga is a dynamic yoga system which relies on the connection of breath and movement, and was re-discovered by the late Krishnamacharya in the 1930s.

Viniyoga - [see below]

Scaravelli Yoga    [top]

Vanda Scaravelli believed that yoga is an individual journey towards an awareness of the body and mind, that allows any practitioner the possibility of a joyful and profound experience of greater wellbeing.

Through the principles of Grounding, Breathing and Releasing, we can address deep-rooted tensions, and work through them to realise our potential.

Scaravelli's work meant that yoga has become accessible to everyone, of any age, shape or size. Classes are inspirational and lighthearted.

Viniyoga    [top]

Viniyoga is essentially the adaptation of yoga to the individual rather than the individual to yoga.

The classes focus on combining correct breathing with both dynamic (moving) and static (held) postures. These are modified and adapted according to each student's particular circumstances and individual requirements.

It is a tradition based on principles practiced and taught by the renowned Krishnamacharya. T.K.V. Desikachar and Gary Kraftsow are among the most well known teachers of this method in the West.

Each session ends with a relaxing visualisation. The aim is to bring about a balance or reintegration of body, breath and mind.

Restorative Yoga    [top]

Restorative Yoga uses supported postures to help bring balance to the nervous system and to heal the body and mind from every day stresses, allowing for a gentle yet deep opening.

Restorative yoga postures help us learn to relax and rest deeply and completely. During deep relaxation, all the organ systems of the body benefit.

Vajrasati Yoga    [top]

Vajrasati Yoga was founded in 2000 by Jim Tarran, a Buddhist-influenced teacher who has trained in Hatha and Iyengar yoga.

Vajrasati synthesises these three traditions, becoming more than the sum total of its parts.

Vajrasati uses the tools of yoga practice; asana (yoga posture), pranayama (yoga breathing exercises), mantra and meditation to reveal the essence of yoga and ultimately release our full humanity.

Suitable for all levels, it combines a strong concern for safety with a clear approach and encourages inquiry through direct experience.

Dynamic Flow Yoga    [top]

Dynamic Yoga is a practice that evolves from traditional Hatha Yoga. It is a series of movements that are consciously connected to the breath.

Dynamic Flow Yoga focuses not only on integrating the breath with movement, but increasing the body's strength and flexibility, whilst integrating alignment and body awareness.

The main qualities of Dynamic Flow Yoga are "Sthira - Sukham - Asanam". The postures should feel steady and comfortable.

Using these qualities, the mind, body and soul can become one in a mindful and compassionate environment.

The Fundamentals of Yoga    [top]

The Fundamentals of Yoga is a six week course that allows you to learn about yourself through the resources of Yoga.

You will learn as a result of being deeply relaxed. Acquiring good postural alignment as a result of your own felt experience. Discovering how to activate your powers of perception and taking away techniques you will be able to utilise in daily life.

All helping to create a sense of well being and balance that will offer you a continuing source of nourishment and support.

Who is it for?
Suitable both for beginners and those with some previous yoga experience, this course will lay firm foundations for ongoing yoga practice.

Baby Yoga-ga    [top]

Baby yoga can be a fun and loving way to interact with your child.

It offers physical stimulation for them and will help to strengthen the spine, develop supple joints and enliven all the body’s systems. This stimulation occurs through the mutual involvement of parent and baby, at a pace which the baby can absorb and integrate.

As yoga postures induce deep relaxation in adults, so in babies they bring about a state of contentment. Doing yoga with your baby means playing, stretching and then relaxing together, each participant focusing on each other.

You will also receive the benefits of tactile stimulation and relaxation, both through feedback from your baby and from the action itself.

Regular yoga practice with your baby will at the same time tone your own muscles, and help balance the successive hormonal changes that follow childbirth, which affect all mothers to some degree.

A typical session:

You will start each class with some breathing and relaxation for yourselves, followed a small warming massage with your baby to prepare the muscles for beginning any stretching exercise.

We then begin with a short hip sequence and floor work. We will come up on our feet with our babies and work through a sequence allowing the babies to experience different movements. We come back down to the floor finishing with some more floor exercises working on their midline and finishing with a few songs with actions and relaxation.

Classes are suitable from 8 weeks until crawling.
